COMBATING XENOPHOBIA, RACISM AND DISCRIMINATION AGAINST
ETHNIC MINORITIES AND INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

COOPI (Cooperazione Internazionale) and Forum for Ethnic Relations, together with their local partners: Bulgarian Cultural Informative Centre Caribrod from Bosilegrad, Timok Club from Knjaževac and Centre for Peace and Reconciliation from Novi Pazar, have initiated this project of democracy in action with an intention to gather together minority leaders, representatives of local authorities, journalists and NGO activists in the following municipalities: Raška, Novi Pazar, Priboj, Prijepolje, Kladovo, Knjaževac, Zaječar and Bosilegrad.

Training courses organized in these multiethnic municipalities aim at:

Introducing the existing legal framework for the protection of minorities
Introducing European minority protection standards
Enabling dialogue between members of different national communities about the problem of common concern
Promotion of tolerance and right to diversity
Exchange of experience in solving minority issues in different regions of Serbia
Starting new initiatives to improve minority rights implementation, i.e. local Ombudsman

Training participants are citizens who are:

Devoted to building of a democratic society and promoting human rights
Actively participating in the work of the organs of local self-governance , non-governmental and other organiza tions of civil society, media and politi cal parties and movements
Willing to gain and further improve their knowledge

Training courses are divided into four clusters covering following units:

Cluster 1: Minority Issue in a Multicultural Society

Cluster 2: Conflict Prevention and Conflict Management

Cluster 3: Decentralization and local Democracy
Cluster 4: Gender Issue and Minority Policy

The project is jointly financed by European Comission and COOPI.
